GLADWYNE RESPONDS TO UPPER MERION
Date: 11/20/06 At 9:45 pm, Station 24 was called to assist at a three-alarm fire in Upper Merion. The fire involved a large carpet warehouse located at 1220 Dekalb Pike. Gladwyne firefighters provided Rapid Intervention Team support for the fire. This vital function is to immediately respond to a firefighter MAYDAY -- a firefighter injured, lost or trapped. The second photo shows Gladwyne firefighters in position on the north side of the building. A/C Andy Culbertson had command.

LMFD PHOTO SHOOT
Date: 11/19/06 Today members from each of the Lower Merion Township Fire Department gathered at Harriton High School for a Department Photograph. Each of the seven companies that make up the Lower Merion Fire Department participated with one truck and a few firefighters in turn-out gear. The aerial shots were taken from the soon to be retiring Snorkel 24! It is great to get all 7 companies together! Next time we will try and get a picture of ALL the apparatus and as many of the 300 firefighters that protect Lower Merion and Narberth.

TRUCK INTO EMBANKMENT
Date: 11/18/06 Gladwyne firefighters were dispatched to Mill Creek and State Road for a trash truck into an embankment with possible rescue. Firefighters arrived and found that although the driver was not trapped, he was injured. Firefighters provided stabilization to the truck and assisted EMS crews.

LADDER TRUCK UPDATE
Date: 11/17/06 Our new ladder truck is well under way! The cab is almost ready to be mounted on the frame, and the trailer is also in construction. We will be making a visit to KME in the next few weeks for more pictures.

RAPID INTERVENTION TEAM TRAINING TRAILER
Date: 11/15/06

On Wednesday, November 15, Gladwyne firefighters conducted rapid intervention team (RIT) training in a specially designed trailer. Rapid Intervention Teams are highly trained firefighters who have the responsibility of rescuing firefighters who become lost or trapped during a fire.

The training scenarios are intense operations conducted in very small spaces with many obstacles and challenges. In total darkness, firefighters have to "fight" their way through collapse floors, debris piles, tangles of wires and other hazards to a trapped firefighter, and then "rescue" the firefighter by removing him back the way they entered.

Although the training is expensive, it provides an excellent opportunity for our firefighters to test all their training and skills, and to really understand the importance of teamwork.
